Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
