The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
