The megacity Awakens to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Around the festival period, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst levels ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Multiple Contamination Factors
The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.
Medical and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely mortalities per year in the capital.
