The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
