The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity

The team behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just teased its next major project, generating a wave of anticipation within the industry. However, subsequent comments from the studio's co-founder have added a new dimension to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a latest statement, Larian's director explained that the developer is using machine learning for specific supporting purposes. These encompass fleshing out pitch decks, creating rough concept art, and writing temporary copy.

Crucially, Vincke stressed that the end content in the game will be crafted solely by human creatives. "Larian is writing every line in-house," he stated.

Larian is continuously growing our roster of concept artists and are busily assembling narrative groups.

Given that this area is being explicitly referenced — we presently have over twenty visual developers and have positions available for further artists.

All our efforts we do is incremental and aimed at letting our team spend greater focus on the creative process.

Every machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a developer's routine, not a replacement for their skill.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The news of employing this technology originally sparked concern among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke issued further clarification on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes these tools to explore references, in the same way we use Google and art books," he stated. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then swap out with hand-crafted concept art."

He added, "Our studio recruits creatives for their inherent skill, not for their ability to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had in the past broken down the company's practical approach to AI and ML, defining its use into key functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like retargeting animations.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to speedily create simple versions of mechanics to validate concepts ahead of complete implementation.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Investigating how AI could one day facilitate new forms of reactivity, especially in managing player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly stated that core creative disciplines — such as music composition — are not departments where the team is cutting human involvement. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these exact roles.

"We are neither launching a game with AI-generated content, nor planning on reducing staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
