The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
