New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
