Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
