The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
