Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Equipment to Locate Afghans Who Worked With Western Forces, Investigation Is Told
An informant has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure sensitive technology allowing the militant group to identify Afghans who collaborated with allied troops.
Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.
Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's management of a serious disclosure of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to relocate to Britain to flee militant rule.
How the Leak Was Discovered
A data file containing private information, comprising identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker working at special operations center in last year.
The leak became known in late 2023, when details of nine people who had applied to relocate to Britain were posted on Facebook.
Taliban Capabilities
“There seems to be this misconception that militant forces are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” she told lawmakers.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can trace your precise location. That is what specialized teams accomplished.”
When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed advanced decryption, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”
Impact of the Security Lapse
Early investigations presented to the investigation suggested that at least 49 kin and associates of people concerned by the breach had been murdered.
A gag order regarding the breach was implemented in late 2023 and prevented all details about it from being made public until July 2025.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization associated with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and changed their contact details. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.

The source argued that government assessment conducted by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”
She detailed terrible abuse endured by concerned people, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
