A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange accommodation when I arrived, yet when I arrived, a major event was happening and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate all night. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend the night somewhere operating through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more people like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared out of place as a female student noticed me loitering in the city center and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: a leftover sandwiches she had taken home her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a young woman letting a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up attending that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her good deed many times over. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
